John Floyd from CSIRO Mineral and Process Engineering, received in 1995 the Clunies Ross Award for his invention of the slag coated, combustion air cooled lance which permitted high mass and energy transfer rates and was shown to have environmental and cost benefits to the base metals industry internationally. He was a key contributor along with Bill Denholm and Frank Jorgensen to the development of SiroSmelt.
