Biography

Dr Brian Dalrymple is a Senior Principal Research Scientist at CSIRO Livestock Industries in the Queensland Bioscience Precinct at The University of Queensland, St Lucia, Brisbane, Queensland, Australia.

He obtained his BSc in Biochemistry from the University of Bristol, United Kingdom (UK) in 1979 and his PhD in genetics from the University of Leicester, also in the UK, in 1982. His doctoral research was on plasmid-borne DNA replication enzymes.

At CSIRO

After a postdoctoral position at the Biozentrum, University of Basel, Switzerland, studying mobile genetic elements, he joined the CSIRO Division of Molecular Biology, North Ryde, Sydney, in 1985, as a member of the team developing recombinant pili vaccines for ovine footrot. The project was a collaboration involving three CSIRO Division (Animal Health in Melbourne, Molecular Biology in Sydney and Protein Chemistry in Melbourne) and two Sydney-based pharmaceutical companies, Biotechnology Australia and Arthur Webster Pty Ltd.

Brian moved to Brisbane in 1987 to join CSIRO as a member of the Babesia bovis (tick fever) vaccine development group. In addition, he has been involved in building a dedicated high- performance computing facility for CSIRO, a resource which is now being used to develop the necessary bioinformatics support for CSIRO Livestock Industries projects.

Research interests

At Livestock Industries he heads a bioinformatics research program with particular interests in:

  • the development of genomics resources
  • assembly of genome sequences, primarily cow and sheep genomes
  • development of Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms (SNP) resources
  • non-coding RNA
  • the comparative genomics of mammals.

He is a participant in the cattle and sheep genome international sequencing consortia; is involved in research using genome sequences and gene expression data to understand the development of muscle structure and function; and currently leads research in the Systems and Computational Biology area. The latter research aims to identify and utilise genes, gene networks, biochemical pathways and biological systems to improve the product quality characteristics of livestock.

He has published more than 65 scientific articles.

Honours and awards

Brian Dalrymple was a seminal contributor to the bovine and ovine genomics research team that was awarded the CSIRO Chairman’s Medal in 2010.
