3D UltraAbsorb Fabric – A novel three-dimensional nonwoven nappy-liner with outstanding functional and aesthetic attributes was invented and developed by a CSIRO team led by Dr Niall Finn. It is a key component in the Huggies brand of baby nappies sold in Australia since 2013.
UltraBattery™ – an efficient, low emission power source for use in low greenhouse gas emission, low fuel consumption hybrid electric vehicles, and may provide a solution to the intermittency of electricity production from renewables (solar, wind, tides, etc). Licensed to Smart Storage Pty Ltd trading as Ecoult™. In October 2008 Japan’s Furukawa Battery Company and East Penn from the United States have signed an exclusive sub-license agreement.
Ultramicrotome – for cutting very thin sections of tissue for electron microscopy; developed by Chemical Physics; manufactured and marketed by The Fairey Aviation Company of Australasia Pty Ltd – See Willis JB, 1987, ‘The CSIRO Division of Chemical Physics 1944-1986′, Historical Records of Australian Science, 7: 153-177
UltraPS analyser – a new particle size analyser for the on-line size measurement of particles in slurries; will improve the operational efficiency of alumina refineries
UMIS (Ultra-micro indentation system) – a machine that measures the properties of surface coatings. Most accurate machine available
UrPol (Urban Pollution model) – model provides estimates of the rate of emission of each of the major vehicle air pollutants
UVQ (Urban Volume and Quality) – a water and contaminant balance model – See Contaminant Balance Component of the Urban Water Volume and Quality (UVQ) Model – Technical description
